Yu Hee and Dietrich Klinge do not erase the marks left behind by their tools. Yu Hee pushes paint away with a squeegee, while Klinge carves into the surface of wood with a saw and chisel. The spaces where material has been pushed aside or carved away retain the physical movements of the artists and the time those movements took.
Yu Hee’s canvas is first grounded by black squeegee marks pushed in various directions, which are then crossed or pierced by thin white or yellow lines. The viewer’s gaze follows the flow of the squeegee only to be halted by a line, and from this pause, it seeks out another path. The advancing momentum of the stroke and the severing force of the line interlock, generating the rhythm of the canvas. Although the pushed paint accumulates, its layers do not conceal their thickness. The density and the edges of the marks clearly reveal where the pressure of the hand intensified and where the angle of the squeegee shifted.
Dietrich Klinge roughly and boldly carves wood to create figures reminiscent of the human body. His works take the form of modest-sized heads, busts, or full-body figures. Rather than modeling after actual physical bodies, these imaginatively transformed human figures appear to have grown like plants, oscillating between the realms of wood and human. While they represent human faces and bodies, they are not entirely intact human forms. The marks left by cutting and thrusting create textures akin to brushstrokes. These textures form the structural bones, muscles, flesh, and facial expressions, drawing in dynamic movement and the viewer's gaze. The artist visually attests to the material's transformation process by leaving the surface unpolished.
However, this surface—which is read as a body—does not align with actual anatomical structures. Deeply gouged indentations appear not where muscles are thickest, but rather where the tool exerted the most force. The surface becomes a skin that does not cover the human body as we know it; thus, his sculptures are perceived first as objects rather than human figures.
The two surfaces are constructed in opposite directions. Yu Hee leaves marks by adding material, whereas Klinge leaves his by taking it away. For Yu Hee, these traces create a rhythm that guides the viewer's next gaze; for Klinge, they create a depth that contradicts the physical form. By tracing the direction of the pushed paint and the depth of the carved tools, the viewer ultimately discovers what the surface reveals and what it conceals.
