권기자의 화면 앞에 서면, 우리는 시간의 흐름을 눈으로 목격하고 그 두께를 촉각으로 느끼게 된다. 그의 작업은 단순히 캔버스 위에 물감을 얹는 행위가 아니라, 자연의 생성과 순환이라는 거대한 법칙을 화면 속에서 재현해 내는 고도의 예술적 의지 그 자체이다.

초기부터 그가 천착해 온 ‘자연(Natural)’ 연작은 물감이 스스로 흐르고 맺히며 만들어내는 우연과, 작가의 필연적인 붓놀림이 교차하는 지점에서 탄생했다. 작가는 튜브에서 직접 짜낸 물감을 캔버스 위로 흘려보내며, 화면 가득 리듬감 넘치는 전면 회화(All-over painting)를 구축해 왔다. 이는 마치 잭슨 폴락의 역동적인 추상에서 시작되어, 우주의 생성과 순환을 다루던 ‘Space life’ 시기를 거쳐 지금의 깊이 있는 자연의 형상으로 진화해 온 권기자만의 아우라(Aura)이다.

이번 전시는 그동안 쌓아온 ‘흘림의 미학’에서 한 걸음 더 나아간 작가의 혁신적인 도전과 마주한다. 작가는 이제 단순히 물감을 흘리는 것에 머물지 않고, 중첩되어 쌓인 물감의 더미를 예리한 칼로 과감하게 절개(Cutting)하는 결행을 단행했다. 반복적인 흘림이 만들어낸 수많은 ‘겹(Layers)’은 이제 작가의 치열한 변용을 통해 ‘결(Grains)’이라는 새로운 단면으로 드러난다.

Panorama: Layers and Grains

Standing before Kwon Ki-ja’s canvases, we witness the flow of time and palpably sense its depth. Her work is not merely the act of applying paint to canvas; it is a profound artistic manifestation of the grand laws of nature’s creation and circulation.

Her long-standing "Natural" series was born at the intersection of chance—where paint flows and forms on its own—and the artist’s deliberate, inevitable brushwork. By pouring paint directly from the tube, she has constructed all-over paintings brimming with rhythmic vitality. This aesthetic has evolved from the dynamic abstraction reminiscent of Jackson Pollock, through the "Space life" series that explored cosmic generation and circulation, to the profound imagery of nature that defines Kwon’s unique aura today.

This exhibition marks a bold encounter with the artist's innovative transformation, stepping beyond the "aesthetics of dripping" she has cultivated for years. She no longer stops at simply pouring paint; she now commits to the decisive act of cutting into the accumulated mounds of paint with a sharp blade. The countless "layers" created by repetitive dripping are now revealed through the artist’s intense transformation as a new cross-section: the "grains".

This is an avant-garde transition that moves beyond the boundaries of flat painting into the realm of physical objects. By transcending the surface (the skin) of the canvas to reveal the condensed mass of paint (the body) within, the artist shifts the focus from mere visual appreciation to the tactile expression of "bodily presence" (body-ness).
