조연주는 지난 10년간 일곱 번의 이사를 경험하며 서로 다른 공간에 머물러 왔다. 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 그는 ‘집’을 고정된 장소가 아닌, 일정한 시간 동안 머무르는 상태 속에서 형성되는 감각적이고 정서적인 개념으로 바라본다.

이번 전시 《나의 방을 나눔합니다 : From This Room to That Room》는 ‘집’이라는 익숙한 개념을 해체하고, 동시대의 이동적인 삶 속에서 우리가 거쳐가는 공간들이 어떻게 ‘집’으로 인식되는지를 질문한다. 작가는 물리적 구조로서의 공간보다, 기억과 감각, 그리고 타인의 흔적이 축적된 상태로서의 ‘집’에 주목한다.

창을 통해 마주한 풍경을 담은 소형 회화, 분절된 화면의 결합과 해체를 반복하는 조립식 회화, 그리고 비단과 목판을 결합한 이중 레이어 회화는 각각 다른 방식으로 공간 경험과 기억의 구조를 드러낸다. 특히 작가는 특정 공간을 ‘집’으로 인식하게 만드는 요소로 개인적 사물, 즉 ‘센티멘털 오브제’에 주목하며, 이를 통해 공간에 축적된 시간과 감정의 층위를 시각화한다.

조연주의 회화는 집을 하나의 고정된 실체로 제시하기보다, 시간과 기억, 시선이 중첩된 상태로 풀어낸다. 이 전시는 우리가 일시적으로 머무르는 수많은 공간들이 어떻게 개인의 경험 속에서 ‘집’이 되어가는지를 조용하게 되묻는다.

Over the past decade, Cho Yeonjoo has moved seven times, inhabiting a series of different spaces. Through these experiences, she approaches “home” not as a fixed place, but as a sensory and emotional condition formed through the act of dwelling over time.

From This Room to That Room begins by deconstructing the familiar notion of home, translating the structures of contemporary, mobile life into painting. Rather than focusing on physical space, Cho attends to home as a state shaped by memory, perception, and the traces of others—raising a quiet yet incisive question about how we live today.

Small-scale paintings capturing fleeting views through windows, modular works that repeatedly assemble and disassemble fragmented surfaces, and double-layered paintings combining silk and wood panel each reveal different ways of structuring spatial experience and memory. Central to this body of work is the notion of “sentimental objects”—personal belongings that enable a space to be recognized as home, functioning as carriers of time, memory, and emotion.

Rather than defining home as a fixed entity, Cho proposes it as a layered condition shaped by time, memory, and perception. The exhibition ultimately reflects on how the many transient spaces we pass through come to be experienced as home.
